I find modern big band records usually falling into one of two camps. Some focus on showcasing all the energy a large ensemble can muster. They're full of zeal and acrobatics, putting spectacle before music.

But there are also big bands that place greater emphasis on composition and sound, approaching the format in a more intellectual way.

I'm happy to report that Helen Sung's debut big band project falls firmly into the second category.
