Interesting release on Ricecar: Organ Music from the Low Countries/Bernard Foccroulle
5 May 2026
Bernard Foccroulle turns to the Brussels court and its circle of early-seventeenth-century organists. A focused release on a label that knows this repertoire well.
The names here are ones serious listeners in this period will recognise: Peter Philips, Peeter Cornet, John Bull, Abraham Van den Kerckhoven. Composers drawn to Brussels at a moment when the city was producing some of the most adventurous organ writing anywhere in Europe, and when Flemish builders were shaping the instrument's future in France, Spain, and beyond.
Foccroulle plays this music from the inside. The instrument speaks clearly, with room around each line. I find this kind of repertoire rewards close listening on a good file, and this edition invites exactly that.
